Enjoy dinner among the flowers! The Des Moines Botanical and Environmental Center is blooming with thousands of flowers and many ways you can enjoy them! This evenings activities are scenically located on the east bank of the Des Moines River, just a short shuttle ride from the hotel. Enjoy a great dinner, fun entertainment and as a bonus, Extension Program Highlights at the Botanical Center you’ll be able to interact with are:
- Gardener Show House - operated by ISU Extension Polk County Master Gardeners. The themed garden green house is changed throughout the year to attractive visitors the Botanical Center and highlight Extension resources.
- Working Green House - operated by Polk County Master Gardeners. It serves as an educational center and green house to start plantings for five different gardens in Polk County. These gardens are Enabling Garden, Discovery Garden @ Iowa State Fair, Demonstration Garden, 4-H After-school Garden with Boys & Girls Club and Empowerment Garden/Victory)

Sherman Hill National Historic District Tour Time: 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm Sherman Hill is one of Des Moines’ oldest surviving neighborhoods. From its establishment in the 1870s, this neighborhood continues to maintain a prominent place in Des Moines historic heritage. Recognized as a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and by the City of Des Moines as part of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program, Sherman Hill offers a unique mix of Victorian, Queen Anne, Italianate, Turn-of-the-Century Four Squares, Double Houses, Stick Style and Flemish architecture. Your event begins with a quick bite at Smokey Row Coffee House’s private dining room. After dinner experience a tour of selected homes, businesses and institutions. Learn and see how neighborhood revitalization got started over 30 year ago and what is happening today. Space is limited for this event, so make sure you sign up early!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame – Iowa Cubs Time: 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm There's nothing like a baseball game for night of fun. The Iowa Cubs may be a minor league team, but this evening is a major league hit, especially when you are sitting in the stadium seats on a great spring evening with a bunch of your Urban Conference friends. The Iowa Cubs are the Triple-A team for the Chicago Cubs. On May 4, they play the Round Rock Express with the game starting 6:30 pm.

Young Frankenstein, a Broadway show at the Des Moines Civic Center Time – 5:30 pm - 10:00 pm The classic Mel Brooks movie is ALIVE! This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that's Fronkensteen) as he attempts to create a monster--but not without scary and hilarious complications. The brains behind the laughter is mad genius and three time Tony® winner Mel Brooks himself--who wrote the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book- along with his record-breaking team from The Producers: five-time Tony-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman and three-time Tony-winning writer, Thomas Meehan. This Broadway production begins at 7:30 pm, so plan to meet in the Marriott lobby at 5:30 pm sharp ready to walk several short blocks to the Court Avenue district together for a dinner on your own and then continue on for the show. Group tickets are available through April 1, so make sure you sign up early!
