Breakout Session 3 - Wednesday 10:00am

Successful urban Extension educators artfully combine their content matter expertise with their ability to work with adults in an educational setting. This session reviews basic concepts of adult education, the basics of transformative learning, conditions that promote transformative learning in urban educational environments, and implications for urban extension programming.

4-H CARTEENS is a driver intervention program in 44 of Ohio's 88 counties with 11 requiring parent attendance. 4-H CARTEENS is a partnership and uses teens as teachers (99% were NEVER in 4-H before) to disseminate the current teen driving information to reduce teen risky driving behaviors. This program was 2008 Urban Program of Distinction.

Local foods have taken on an important role in society, especially in urban areas. Re-imagining a More Sustainable Cleveland fostered 56 neighborhood-based pilot projects to create everything from community gardens to large urban farms. This presentation will explore pitfalls, successes, and lessons learned from the pilot year.

Texas AgriLife Extension workshops that combine classroom and hands-on activities have introduced natural stream processes to over 300 professionals in Tarrant County, Texas.  Topics included the Rosgen system for classification and restoration techniques.  Participants also surveyed a stream segment and analyzed substrate.

Family Preparedness and Ready Business are two new programs from the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) that teach families and small- to medium-sized businesses how to plan for disasters.  Resources help urban Extension educators teach the programs.

Participants will learn how youth and adults can partner to explore science in their urban communities through film.  Tools and strategies for using filmmaking as a vehicle for positive youth development and science programming will be provided.  Youth surveys, 4-H leader interviews, and youth-created documentaries will be used to discuss how this program might be used in other metro/urban areas.

Volunteers can help teachers involve kids in nutrition and gardening.  Eating from the Garden is a combined nutrition and gardening program in schools and community centers.  Through local partnerships and trained nutrition garden volunteers, fourth and fifth graders learn about tasting fruits and vegetables, eating healthier, garden development and maintenance.

If the "new Extension expects to connect people and programs," we must understand the "emerging issue" of generational differences in the workplace and community.  This presentation will enable participants to explore generational differences, engage in conversation to increase personal understanding and provide strategies for working intergenerationally.

Delivering effective Extension programs to limited income audiences is a challenging task because of the many barriers associated with their living conditions.  This session describes challenges, strategies employed, and successes in implementing a comprehensive faith-based health education program called Stay Strong and Healthy for Life in St. Louis City.

A Cognitive Edge Future Backwards technique will be used to compare and contrast past perspectives and present and future aspirations. Together, participants will investigate and develop a sense of what Cooperative Extension's future may look like based on the perspectives of participants who have an interest in urban programming.
